Essays and book reviews.

A brief note on review ratings: Review sites tend to define ratings of 3/5 as ‘liked’, but there is pressure to treat 5/5 as ‘liked’ and anything lower as a disappointment. This is a problem in two directions. On the one hand, if I use 5/5 for ‘liked’, there’s nothing left with which to indicate that something is extraordinary. On the other, if I use 3/5 to mean ‘liked’ and review readers take it to mean ‘weak’, is communication taking place? (Set aside a concern that the ‘3’ might actually be harming the writer for that reason.)
Yes, I use 3/5 to mean I liked the book. I use 5/5 rarely.
