Otherworldly starts with many typical tropes. The protagonist is killed off and finds herself in another world, in a child’s body. The new world has magic, monsters, and a system that regulates classes and skills and levels and stats. The protagonist is a child of a high-ranking house, and must contend with unfriendly siblings.

What makes this novel stand out - and in a good way - is that most of the protagonist’s progress is personal and social. Yes, she has Skills that can be used aggressively, but she also acquires social Skills (and social skills).

The setting includes a pantheon - but by and large the gods are jerks. Much of the story revolves around Nora trying to chart her own path, rather than theirs.
