Amelia Thornheart – Keene

This book starts with a generic premise - and an extraordinary protagonist.

Amelia is hospital-bound, and has had time to reach extraordinary strength in her favorite game. She plays an absurdly-strong demon spell-caster. Then she wakes up as a human on a demon warship. Yes, she’s still an absurdly-strong caster. She is also bubbly and ingenuous. The demons (who are at war with Humans) find her very confusing.

Demons in this context are not arcane beings. They are humanoids with horns and a few other demonic characteristics who tend to be at war with Humans. The most powerful spell casters can actually channel some powers of a chosen demonic god. It would be politically disastrous if it came out that Amelia can channel the powers of multiple demonic gods. And human gods.

Amelia herself is not sensitive to political subtleties. While demons are trying to figure out how to interact with a friendly human with largely-unknown capabilities, Amelia is going “Oh boy! I’m learning how to cook!” I’m enjoying this book.
