The protagonist is ultra-competent, as is typical for this author. What is less typical is that she is placed in a highly-political environment: If Vanda has complete control of the magic she guards, but gets the politics wrong, she will fail. In fact, it will mean that she wasn’t doing her job, because success in a political environment requires working with people. The author makes this work.
