This book isn’t nearly as good as the earlier books in the series. I’ve been enjoying the series, and didn’t expect to give up on this book halfway through. The series has told a coherent story with a considerable overlay of whimsy, and introduced us to an interesting set of characters. The whimsy is mostly absent from this book. The story lacks plot integrity: Things happen because people who should know better make whatever mistakes the plot requires to proceed. The characters have lost depth, and behave like caricatures of their formerly-developed selves. Whatever it is that makes a reader keep smiling and keep turning pages was missing.
