I wanted to like this book, but I couldn’t finish it. It presses all the right buttons - admirable characters who are obviously meant for each other, surrounded by villains, surviving through pluck, luck, and talent. But the characters are two-dimensional. They are nothing but their pluck, luck, and talent. And the plotting is too mechanical. If anything appears to be going well, the characters will be attacked by a plot device, typically in the form of one of the villains.
