Lake Silence – Anne Bishop
This is essentially a spin-off novel. It is placed in the world of “Written in Red”, but there is no continuity of characters or storyline. There is also no tension; the bad guys never had a chance.
The bad guys are a bunch of developers who - incredibly, in a land which has just seen a mass-purge of humanity - don’t take the folk who did the purging seriously. They are up against beings who control the weather, and have recently destroyed an entire nation in a fit of pique.
For readers who enjoyed the earlier novels, Lake Silence provides an interesting look at a world in which humans and others are finding a new equilibrium. But it’s an interesting look, not a strong story.
