A Budding Scientist in a Fantasy World – Acaswell

I’m enjoying this web novel. Fair warning: It has a high geek factor, and readers who do not care for that will not care for this novel.

In fact, the geek factor is at the heart of this web novel. Alice is a high-school student with a passion for science, who is transported to another world. (Unusually for this genre, the way she is transported is of lasting relevance. The two worlds are interacting destructively.) The world in which Alice finds herself has an RPG flavor: Magic works. People can gain skills, classes, and attributes - and advance them. This is where the budding scientist comes in. There has been little research, as we think of it, into why magic and the class system actually function. Until Alice.

The web novel has three main ingredients. There is Alice’s story, as she first survives in her new world’s wilderness and then survives in its social and political world. There is the larger story, in which the event that brought her to this world turns out to be part of a broader disaster. And there is the budding-scientist element, in which Alice experiments with her new world’s magic and starts understanding it.
